Community Sports Campus
Back in 2005, agreement was reached between the Hemeryck family who were developing extensive new housing in Jamestown and SOCC for the donation of a 7 acre field to SOCC and within that field provision was also made for the donation of the land that would comprise a 400mm 8 lane athletics track direct to Ratoath Athletics Club.
In the intervening years SOCC has facilitated the full scale development of this valuable space with the overall objective of increasing participation in physical activity by our community at large.
We are next entering what will be the final phase of the development at which point the land will be fully utilised.
Successive phases of development have seen the emergence of a truly impressive multi-sports campus, made even more significant by its co-location with the adjoining Ratoath College. Today the campus includes that original 400m grass athletics track, a new tartan area developed by Athletics for long jump, high jump, sprinting and conditioning, 5 tennis courts, 3 astro pitches, a rugby pitch and a new spectator viewing area. Additional land was also secured for the building of a new car park in 2017.
The final phase will shortly be seeking planning permission and is likely to include a new Community Sports and Physical Activity Hub Building which will accommodate Ratoath Golden Gloves Boxing Club, other martial arts sports, gymnastics, a gym area, some meeting rooms and toilets and possibly also a small café. A small childrens’ playground to be developed in conjunction with Meath County Council is earmarked for the front of the building. This will then see spaces on the community sports campus for all ages, from 1 to 90 and from discussions with Sport Ireland the hub building may also serve as a base for a Physical Activity Co-ordinator for all sporting and physical activity in Ratoath.
